Dangerous driver is first to be jailed by dashcam footage after motorist video of his reckless overtaking

James Stocks, 24, of Cheshire has become the first person in the UK to be jailed by dashcam footage after a video showing his reckless overtaking move that forced a Ford Transit van off the road was posted online.

Mr Stocks was handed an eight-month sentence after he pulled off two heart-stopping overtakes on the A495 in Shropshire back in April.

The out-of-control driver's black Volkswagen Golf nipped past a silver Ford Ka on a blind bend, causing the Transit van to take emergency action and swerve on to a verge.

The landmark case is believed to be the first time that a dangerous driver has been convicted using dashcam footage posted by a member of the public.

Matt Stockdale, chairman of PoliceWitness, said: 'I formed PoliceWitness after I was almost killed by a reckless HGV driver.

'Frustrated that there were no police to witness what had occurred, I decided to empower the public to assist the police, in order to hold those who flout the law to account.

'To date, nearly 1,000 motorists up and down the country have faced positive formal police action following the submission of dashcam footage by those who call themselves PoliceWitnesses.

'Being banned from driving, or even losing your job following a moment of madness, has often been described as the ultimate price to pay having been caught on video by a dash cam.

'But this case has resulted in a driver losing their liberty and freedom - and in my view rightly so.'

Minibus misses car by inches - terrifying dashcam footage

Knowing how dash cams make distances people are from your car look further away than they actually were when you watch footage back, this must have been mere inches of a near miss.

This footage was Filmed on a notoriously dangerous road (A9 near Blair Atholl), the footage shows a minibus just avoiding an oncoming car.

The near-miss, posted on the Aberdeen Dash Cam Facebook page, the Daily Record claims the van which has the camera in it is doing 50mph when out of nowhere the minibus overtakes and just avoids an oncoming car.

Rikki Evans commented on Facebook: "The people in that car would have not stood a chance. That would have been an instant fatal. Stupid impatient driver!!"

Protect yourself from idiots like this who if an accident had occurred would have tried to claim that you went in to the back of them through no fault of their own firmly pinning the blame on you!!

Dash Cam Catches Swerving Car Narrowly Miss Tractor

A driver who dangerously swerved around other cars and almost crashed into a tractor escaped justice because the clock on the dash cam that captured the incident was not properly set.

The shocking footage was captured by Tony Seva on September 27 as he was driving on the busy A11 dual carriageway in Norfolk.

The footage clearly shows a blue Ford Focus behaving recklessly, cutting in from the left, narrowly missing a slow-moving tractor and then nearly colliding with the central reservation.

Mr Seva said he was driving at more than 50mph and the Ford Focus driver "came out of nowhere" at a much quicker speed.
 
The incident was reported to police but an incorrect time stamp on the footage meant that officers were unable to prosecute the driver. Norfolk police did however have "very strong word" with the driver in question.

Chief Inspector Chris Spinks emphasized that dashboard cameras were "vital" in investigating incidents on the road.

Police are appealing for 'dashcam' footage after an attempted robbery at a garage in West Lothian.

They say on-board cameras fitted to drivers' vehicles may have recorded a silver car similar to an Astra parked by the side of the road which was connected to the crime.

Officers are asking to all motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists who were travelling in Blackburn's Main Street at around 9.15pm on Friday, June 20 to contact them.

The attempted robbery at the Murco garage was carried out by a man described as white and of medium build.

He was wearing:

• Dark blue or black shiny shell or waterproof style hooded top
• Dark blue tracksuit trousers with single white piping down the outside of each leg
• White logo on upper left thigh of trouser leg 
• White trainers 
• Llight blue surgical disposable gloves 
• Black tammy style hat
• Black snood or scarf covering the lower part of his of face.

Detective Inspector Dave Pinkney, who is leading the investigation, said: "The man is believed to have parked a silver car, an Astra or similar, on the nearside verge of West Main Street/A705, on the westbound carriageway between the Murco garage and Mosshall Caravan Park.

"This may have caused cyclists or motorists to move round it, and it is possible that anyone who was using a 'dashcam' or 'action camera' on a bike or motorbike has recorded it.

"The use of such devices is becoming more common, and I would appeal to those drivers or cyclists who passed down this road in either direction around 9.15pm and who have dashboard or handlebar cameras fitted to their vehicle or bike, to contact us so that any footage can be viewed.

"This was a violent act, and while his victim was not seriously injured, it is vital that we trace this man and bring him to justice. Police Scotland can be contacted on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
